Bill Would Ban The Sale of AR-15 Rifles to People Age 20 and Under

A proposed bill could ban the sale of AR-15's to teens under the age of 20.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford introduced a bill today that could change the legal age someone could buy an AR-15.

Currently, AR-15's can be purchased by anyone 18 years or older. House bill 4990 would block anyone under 20 years old from buying the gun.

"AR-15's seem the preferred weapon of choice for school shooters, for mass shooters and we need to do something," says Rutherford, D-Richland. "We need to narrowly tailor a solution and that solution is a bill I proposed today, that I dropped today, which would stop anyone in high school from being able to buy and AR-15. We narrowly tailored it to make it 20 years old, not 21 because we believe 21 is an artificial age."

Rutherford says 20 is an age in which everyone should be out of high school.

"Up to that age you cannot buy an AR-15, and that's a simply put bill that I believe will go a long way in stopping the purchase and the use of AR-15's in school shootings."

The bill was referred to the House Judiciary committee.
