Mayor addresses some concerns over new Scout Plant in Blythewood

Residents are encouraged to attend council meetings held on the fourth Monday of every month to give input on the changes coming to their community.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — As construction progresses on the Scout Motors production center in Blythewood, questions and concerns about how the town will handle the expected growth are on the rise.

“I think it's a historic change for South Carolina as a whole, first and foremost,” said Blythewood’s Mayor, Sloan Griffin.

While Griffin views the Scout plant as a growth opportunity, he acknowledges it is a double-edged sword, with some residents worried about the environmental impact and the population boom.

“We just have to do our part as leaders and citizens to continue to voice your concerns and opinions, whether they are good or bad,” Griffin said.

Among the concerns recently voiced is whether the community can handle increased traffic. However, the mayor said these concerns should soon be alleviated with ongoing road widening construction. “Blythewood Road expansion from a two-lane to a four-lane on the west side of I-77 is still moving along according to schedule,” Griffin noted.

While roads will be modified to accommodate growth, some question if the same will be done for residential spaces.

“Although we want people to be able to move into the town limits of Blythewood and enjoy these things that we all enjoy as Blythewood residents, we want to be smart about it,” Griffin explained.

The mayor added that residential growth must be gradual, which is why no plans for developing additional residential properties have been approved yet.

“Although we have had conversations with developers, there is nothing serious on the table because we are standing firm that we mean business when we talk about building on 20,000-square-foot lot spaces,” Griffin said.

Residents are encouraged to attend council meetings held on the fourth Monday of every month to give input on the changes coming to their community.

“Come out, sign up to speak during an open citizens' comment. We don't restrict you. We will give you the time and opportunity to voice your opinion,” Griffin said.

The next Blythewood Council meeting will be held on Monday, July 22. Scout Motors representatives will be present to provide additional insight, information, and updates for those seeking more details.
