CALHOUN COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities in Calhoun County are investigating the discovery of a body that was found in the Congaree River on Saturday afternoon.
According to Coroner Donnie Porth, boaters on the river first reported the discovery around 3 p.m., and crews were able to recover the deceased from some brush on the shore around 4:30 p.m. The body was found in the Sandy Run area and roughly two miles east of the local DAK Americas industrial facility.
Porth said preliminary investigations reveal the person was a male, but details regarding his age, race, cause of death, or overall identity will likely not be available before an autopsy is performed in Newberry County.
Porth believes the deceased person washed down the river during recent river floods. He suspects the person has been deceased for between one and two weeks.
Porth said the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Calhoun County Sheriff's Office are also involved in the investigation. He said additional details may be released to help identify the person once they are determined during the autopsy.
