'Student, athlete, friend:' Camden High issues statement on student killed in boat crash

County officials say a 15-year-old student at the school died Friday night after a boating collision.

CAMDEN, S.C. — A Camden High School student killed in a boat crash over the weekend is being remembered as a student, athlete, and friend.

County officials say a 15-year-old student at the school died Friday night after a boating collision on the Wateree River. The student's name was not released publicly by the coroner's office.

"He was a wonderful student, athlete and friend, and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends," said Lesley Corner, the Camden High School Principal. "At Camden High we are a family and we care deeply about all of our students and staff, so when a tragic loss occurs it is very emotional for us all. We will have additional counselors and social workers present to support our students and staff this week. Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with this family in the difficult days ahead."

Kershaw County Coroner David West say the collision took place Friday around 10:15 p.m. and involved two boats. West said the vessels had a group of friends on them and they were both out on the lake fishing together.

West said both boats were moving when one hit the other near Pine Tree Creek. There was no foul play suspected.

West said an autopsy was to be conducted Monday.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, which is investigating the incident, is asking anyone with information to contact them.
