Columbia, SC - (WLTX) A rare plant is about to bloom in Columbia.
It's called the Century plant and it's become a bit of an attraction here in the Midlands.
Standing at almost 13 ft tall the Century plant at Prestige Pools is beginning to bloom, something that is happening for the first time in 15 years.
Prestige Pools office manager, Shayley Gantt, shares when they first spotted the growth of the rare plant. She says, "it just started we noticed it last week. It's been about 15 years if not a couple years more."
Gantt goes on to say, "We've had a bunch of customers that pulled up and started seeing it bloom and they were like you need to call somebody it's a really big deal. I mean I've heard of them but I've actually never seen one in the process of it."
A Century plant generally takes between 10-30 years to bloom, not a hundred as the name would imply, but for Gantt it's not just a process it's something personal.
"My mom had a lot to do with it being put out here. It just makes me excited to be able to watch it bloom, that was something she always wanted to see but she didn't get to see it so now me and my brother and sister get to see it for her" says Gantt.
