SLED, Lexington County deputies investigate fatal fire

The Lexington coroner has identified the man who died as Craig Raymond Kustermann, 54 of Batesburg-Leesville.

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Lexington County Sheriff's Department are investigating a fatal fire at a home in Lexington County.

Fire department units were called to a home in the 1200 block of Charles Town Road around midday Monday for a structure fire.  That area is about five miles southwest of the town of Pelion.

When firefighters went inside the home, they discovered a body.

Lexington county coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the man who died as Craig Raymond Kustermann, 54.  An autopsy will be conducted on Thursday at MUSC in Charleston.

SLED said their Arson Unit was requested to come in and assist in determining the origin of the fire.  Law enforcement said it is routine for the Lexington County Fire Service to request SLED's assistance to determine the origin and cause of a deadly fire.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Office did tell News19 that at this time they are not searching for any suspects as part of their work on the case.

Firefighters continued to monitor the remains of the mobile home Monday afternoon, using infrared cameras to detect and extinguish any hotspots.

Acquaintances of Kustermann said he was an amputee and bound to a wheelchair.

This is a developing story. More details will be posted when they become available.
