Hundreds fed on Thanksgiving by Charlotte organization

Organizers say they typically serve around 300 families and this year.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Champion House of Care spent the morning serving meals to Charlotte residents in need.

This is the 5th year they held this event. Organizers say they typically serve around 300 families and this year - in collaborating with CMS’s Mckinney-Vento families - they expected a lot more.

“When you’re on the street, you don’t know where your next meal is coming from. And to know this is thanksgiving when families are supposed to be together,” Janette Kinard, the Executive Director of Champion House of Care, said.

Those who went to grab a hot meal say they’re grateful for events like these.

“I don’t even know if we would’ve had a Thanksgiving dinner if it hadn’t been for these guys. You can’t even put it into words. It’s a blessing that they’re out there doing that for people. Hopefully, we’ll be able to do it for others next year,” attendees Matthew & Brandie Correll said.

The event was set up in two locations to reach as many people as possible. And the lines of people who came by were able to get mac and cheese, rice, green beans, and everything else they needed. Organizers say they’re grateful to be able to help out in this way.

“This could’ve been me – out here with no clothes and no food. So, I am grateful to know that I can give back to others and teach my kids and my grandkids how to give back before you give to yourself,” Kinard said.
