Child shot while watching TV at northeast Columbia home, report says

The child answered the door for deputies while holding his leg.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County deputies are searching for whoever shot a child inside a home over the weekend in northeast Columbia. 

The shooting took place around 4:30 p.m. Sunday on Summit Terrace Court. That's located just off Clemson Road. 

According to an incident report, deputies had gotten an emergency call of a shooting at a home at that location. When they knocked on the door a child answered the door while holding his right leg. The child had blood visible on his right hand and shirt. 

The report said the child told investigators he was watching TV on the couch when he was shot through the front window of the house. Paramedics were called to the scene and the boy was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The child's mother told officers she'd seen someone in the passenger seat of a white Nissan Altima outside fire a gun with something wrapped around his hand. The driver was leaning on the steering wheel and looking through the windshield.

The report stated the mother followed the vehicle out of the subdivision and said the when the suspects noticed her, the sped off, and she last saw then turning onto Elders Pond Road from Hardscrabble Road. 

Two other homes were also hit by gunfire. A person inside one home said she was asleep when the gunfire began but heard three shots, while the other home was unoccupied. 

Shell casings were recovered from all the homes.
