9-year-old in critical condition after Sumter home riddled with bullets

The child was found with a gunshot wound early Monday.

SUMTER, S.C. — Sumter County deputies are searching for whoever is responsible for shooting at least 28 rounds into a home and critically injuring a 9-year-old child who was hit while inside the home early Monday morning.

Deputies said around 1:42 a.m. Monday, a deputy heard multiple gunshots in the vicinity of Thomas Sumter Highway and Four Bridges Road. Around the same time, 911 got a call of a shooting which allowed deputies to determine the shooting had happened at a home between West Brewington Road and Thomas Sumter Highway.

Other deputies were dispatched to the area, and found a home on Bunneau Street, where they found a green mobile home that had been riddled with bullet homes.

Mark Bordeaux with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office said deputies quickly made contact with the family in the home.

“When our deputies arrived on scene, they were met by family members who directed them to inside their home. And it was there that the deputy found a juvenile who had been struck by a bullet,” Bordeaux said.

At last check the 9-year-old victim was listed in critical condition.

Investigators marked more than 2 dozen apparent bullet holes in the home, with many piercing the walls and windows.

Investigators said they are examining evidence and witness testimony to find the person or persons responsible. Deputies did not say if they have any leads on who may have fired the shots.

In a news release,  Sheriff Anthony Dennis said he wants to partner with the community to stop what he called "senseless" gun violence. "A child lies in the hospital instead of going to school," the statement said.

The sheriff said his investigators would work around the clock to find those responsible and he said that he's concerned juveniles are becoming more involved with gun violence.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or the sheriff's office at 803-436-2000.  People can also report to Crimestoppers at www.p3tips.com, or the “P3” mobile app. Tipsters could be eligible for a reward and can remain anonymous.
