COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Columbia community is concerned after deputies say a 14-year-old was shot on Tuesday evening.
According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department, a teenage girl was shot near the Arthurtown Community around 5:30 pm on Tuesday. The incident occurred near Aster Circle between Shop and Bluff Roads.
According to deputies the 14-year-old girl was a passenger in a white Audi A4 and bullets came through the rear glass.
She was taken to the hospital. Deputies told News 19 on Wednesday morning she is expected to be okay.
Marty Ramsey was home when he heard shots rang out on Tuesday.
"I was in the house watching TV and next thing I know, heard something say, 'Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.' I ran out the door and seen my homeboy, he was laying on the ground," said Ramsey.
Luckily Ramsey's friend was okay and got up from the ground. After realizing his friend was okay, Ramsey heard the car speed off.
"You don't hardly see that too much around here. I don't know what's going on in this neighborhood, but it just needs to stop," explained Ramsey.
Ramsey say it's typically quite during the day but gets a little rowdy at night.
"(It) makes you want to go out and hurt somebody because of that, man," said Ramsey. "I ain't got no kids but I got nephews and nieces and stuff stay here and that's what really got me pissed off right there."
Many people in the neighborhood tells News 19 they want to see more law enforcement in the area to help prevent these kinds of things from happening.
"They need to have more patrolmen coming through here. That's all. Just have more patrolmen come through," said Ramsey.
Some folks in the community believe having a law enforcement presence in the area will discourage people from breaking the law at the place they call home.
After speaking with the Richland County Sheriff's Department, deputies say they hear this Columbia community's concern and plan on sending more law enforcement in the area.
The department is still investigating the incident and have not determined a suspect at this time.
Ramsey hopes law enforcement is able to catch whoever shot the 14-year-old girl soon.
"They need to get them off the street man. It's just crazy. I don't know what makes them do this here or what possessed them to do this here but they need to get all them guns off the street. That's all there's to it. Get all the guns off the street."
