City of Columbia employee killed in accident was just 27 years old

Officials say Brooks-Summers was a City of Columbia employee since November 2023 and was assigned as a maintenance assistant for yard trash collection.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The City of Columbia Public Works employee involved in a fatal collision on Farrow Road last week has been identified.

According to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, 27-year-old Bernard Brooks-Summers of Columbia was pronounced deceased at the accident scene. 

According to city officials, Brooks-Summers was a City of Columbia employee since November 2023 and assigned as a maintenance assistant for the yard trash collection operation.

Columbia Police said the collision took place Friday in the 5100 block of Farrow Road, near the intersection of Craven Street. City of Columbia officials said around 2:45 p.m., the two public works vehicles hit each other. At this point, police haven't said what they believe led up to the crash. 

Brooks-Summers was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The other driver was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital and continues to receive medical attention for what the city describes as non life-threatening injuries. 

“The City of Columbia is deeply saddened by the loss of one our beloved City employees,” City Manager Teresa Wilson said in a statement. “Our prayers and condolences go out to the families, friends and co-workers affected by this tragic event.”
