COLUMBIA, S.C. — A University of South Carolina student is confirmed to be the person who died in a retention pond near a Columbia apartment complex over the weekend.
News19 reached to USC officials who said that 21-year-old Tyler Boose was a student at the school. The Richland County Coroner's Office had earlier confirmed Boose died on Sunday at the pond, which was located behind the Tropical Ridge Apartments on Stoneridge Drive in Columbia. The coroner did not say how he died.
"“We will continue working with the Columbia Police Department and the Columbia Fire Department to fully investigate this incident”, Coroner Naida Rutherford said.
A spokesperson for the Columbia Fire Department said Sunday they were called to the area of Tropical Ridge Apartments for a water rescue from at the pond, which is at a former quarry. Three other people were rescued at the scene and didn't need to be taken to the hospital.
The university said Boose was a senior management major from Hillsborough, New Jersey.
“Our sympathies and prayers go out to his family and friends," the school said in a statement. "Counseling services are being provided to those most impacted by the loss and are available to anyone affected by this tragedy.”
