DHEC talks about PFAs in drinking water

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances that are resistant to heat, water, oil and are in almost everything you use.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A press conference was held by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control to talk about a project monitoring surface water and PFAs.

PFAs is the abbreviation for chemicals, Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, that are resistant to heat, water, oil and are in almost everything you use.

As a result they have found their way into our drinking water.

The project is to determine how much PFA's are in our dinking water.

During study data suggests that these chemicals have been found near surface water sites.

In local streams and waters about 26 PFA compounds have been found.

Jennifer Hughes, chief of the bureau of water says that they are still studying, "The EPA has composed regulations to establish maximum contaminate levels for six PFA's compounds in drinking water."

The EPAs office of ground and drinking water will be holding a public hearing on May 4.  If you'd like to attend you can register here.
