Diondre Overton, former Clemson football wide receiver, dies in overnight shooting

Former Clemson wide receiver Diondre Overton was killed in a shooting at a Greensboro house party. An investigation is underway.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Page High School and Clemson University alumnus Diondre Overton died in an overnight shooting in Greensboro on Saturday, according to the Guilford County Sheriff's Office.

At around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, deputies said they responded to a call about a loud house party and noise disturbance at 3205 Spring Mill Rd.

As they got closer to the scene, deputies said they were informed that a shooting happened at that location.

Diondre Overton, 26, was found shot on the scene. Despite medical aid, Overton was pronounced dead, according to deputies.

Deputies said the incident was isolated.

The Greensboro native played as a wide receiver for both schools. He joined Page High's football team in his junior year in 2014 and was recruited by Clemson in 2016.

Overton was a two-time national champion and four-time ACC champion.

He wrapped up his tenure at Clemson with 52 career receptions for 777 yards and seven touchdowns in 1,021 snaps over 51 games, according to Clemson Football.

"A beautiful young life cut short at 26," Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney told reporters after his team's win over Appalachian State on Saturday. "He was one of the best teammates we've had come through here. My heart hurts and my prayers are with his family."

He went on to play professionally in the USFL, recording 42 catches for 533 yards and five touchdowns for the Philadelphia Stars over the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

The investigation is ongoing.
