COLUMBIA, S.C. — Dominion Energy customers will soon be paying a little more for their electricity.
The South Carolina Public Service Commission approved the rate increase late Tuesday afternoon. Utilities in South Carolina must have their requests for such increase approved by the commission.
Dominion said the monthly bill of a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity will increase by approximately 3.91%, which is $5.49 a month, beginning in May.
In a statement, Dominion Energy said they're committed to minimizing the impact of fuel costs on customers' bills. However, they added they need to recover the costs of purchasing and transporting fuel to produce the electricity they provide to customers every day.
Dominion had originally requested a slightly larger increase, 5.7%, which on a monthly bill of a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity would have increased their costs by $7.99 a month.
