Elgin Police Department releases charges against Freddie Grant

He's the man suspected of killing Adriana Laster and serving a 30-year sentence for killing Gabbiee Swainson.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Elgin police on Tuesday revealed the exact charges they’ll bring against Freddie Grant, the man who’s the prime suspect in the murder of Adriana Laster.

Laster’s remains were identified on Friday after being found in a grave at a sand pit in Richland County. She was missing for over 12 years.

Grant is the same man who killed 15-year-old Gabbiee Swainson in 2012.

“We found some bones and they tell me where they were at and it hit me at that point, it's Freddie Grant,” Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said.

Tuesday morning the Elgin Police Department released all the charges it plans to file against Freddie Grant. On the list are murder, domestic violence, and kidnapping. The agency said in a statement the date for the warrants to be delivered has not been scheduled.

“We have not actually served Grant with the following warrants as of the time of this email. The date has not been scheduled yet, but will be in the near future,” the statement from Elgin Police said in part.

Sheriff Lott said there’s time since Grant is already behind bars.

“He’s in the Department of Corrections he’s not going anywhere and they’ve been aware we’ve got warrants they have a hold on him it’s just administrative stuff now,” he said.

Sheriff Lott says the department was able to have Grant moved from minimum to maximum facility on Friday. Once Grant is served his warrants in prison, the judicial process will begin but it could take longer than expected.

“There’ll probably go in front of a grand jury and eventually they’ll be set for trial, which is no time soon cause the solicitor’s office backed up already with other murder cases. There’s no hurry he’s not going anywhere,” he said.

Grant is currently serving 30 years in prison for killing Gabbiee Swainson and Lott is hoping for another conviction in this case.

“He should be there for life but I don’t have any control of that it’s just my personal feeling he should never see light again,” Sheriff Lott said.

News 19 spoke with the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office on Tuesday, they confirmed no court dates have been set yet….since the warrants haven’t been served.
