Deputies: Escaped South Carolina prisoner captured in Columbia, three more remain at large

The suspects all escaped from the Chesterfield County jail, officials say.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — One of four escaped prisoners from a South Carolina jail has been arrested near Columbia, law enforcement officials confirmed.

Richland County deputies said 23-year-old Emanuel Planco was taken into custody Thursday morning after attempting to break into some vehicles. The arrest came nearly three days after authorities say he and three other detainees left the Chesterfield County Detention Center.

Richland County deputies said just before 2 a.m. Thursday, they went to the 1400 block of Willow Oak Drive, which is near Parklane Road and Highway 277, for a call about someone possibly breaking into cars. When officers got there, they said a Richland County K9 specialist saw the suspect break into a Kia. They said the suspect then drove away, and deputies began pursuing him.

Deputies said they used stop sticks in an area off Lone Drive off Farrow Road to stop his car. According to the agency, Planco got out and ran, and K-9 Kiro tracked the suspect to a woodline. At that point, officers were able to take him into custody.

Planco had to be transported to a hospital to treat dog bites.

The sheriff's department said they then determined that earlier in the night, Planco had tried to break into a home on Willow Oak Drive and steal a bicycle. However, they said the homeowner saw Planco on video and fired a shot into the air, which they said scared Planco away from the house. They believe Planco also broke into three other vehicles in the area, stealing multiple credit cards, IDs, and a Playstation 4.

He's now charged with failure to stop for blue lights and siren, reckless driving, possession of a stolen vehicle, grand larceny, burglary 1st, and financial transaction card theft.

When he's released, Planco will be booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. It's unclear when he may be taken back to Chesterfield County.

Law enforcement said Anton Conway Bennett, Kyonne Marquise McLeod and De’Shawn Malik Fox are still on the run. Records show McLeod and Bennett were sentenced on charges of breaking into vehicles. Bennett was additionally charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

Fox was sentenced on charges including assaults and inflicting bodily injuries.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating. They said anyone who sees the other men should not approach them and should call 911 in an emergency.
