COLUMBIA, S.C. — A fire at a metal recycling yard caused traffic issues and a substantial amount of smoke in northeast Richland County.
Flames emerged at the yard on the 7700 block of Fairfield Road Tuesday. Smoke could be seen billowing from the fire miles away.
Fairfield Road was closed for several hours as crews worked to extinguish the flames. As a precaution, eight residents were evacuated from homes in the area.
This isn't the first time a salvage yard fire has shut down Fairfield Road. In August of last year, a fire popped up at the North Columbia Auto Salvage, closing the road for a short time.
