'We are here to help': FEMA opens 4 temporary disaster recovery centers in South Carolina

In the wake of recent hurricanes, FEMA is stepping up its efforts to support those affected by the disaster.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — In the wake of recent hurricanes, FEMA is stepping up its efforts to support those affected by the disasters.

Tiana Suber, a spokesperson for FEMA, emphasized the importance of face-to-face assistance for victims who may be overwhelmed by the recovery process.

"I know a lot of things become confusing because you're trying to think about your next move, your house, and the things that you lost," Suber said. "You're trying to think about your family."

Beginning Monday, October 21, FEMA opened four temporary Disaster Recovery Centers in Aiken, Allendale, Greenwood, and Newberry counties. These centers aim to help individuals navigate the application process for assistance.

"They might not understand the application process," Suber explained. "A lot of times, they get a letter in the mail stating that they're ineligible because they filled out something wrong on the application. That’s why we encourage people to come to the disaster recovery center so we can help you through that application process."

At the centers, representatives will assess unique needs, which could include rental assistance, transitional assistance for those displaced from their homes, and support for small businesses.

Tommy Long, Newberry’s Emergency Management Director, acknowledged FEMA's helpfulness but stressed that patience is essential within the community. "People have to realize it takes time to get things here and get them in place," Long said. "That’s why it’s taking a little longer than they may expect, but it just takes time to get things working."

In addition to recovery assistance, Suber noted that immediate needs are being addressed. "People can be eligible for immediate needs, things that they need right now—food, water, medicines, formula, diapers," she said. "We're here to touch on all aspects of helping the survivors."

For those planning to visit one of the temporary recovery centers, appointments are not needed but it's crucial to bring necessary documentation. The centers are open from 8 AM to 7 PM, but the closing dates vary.
