FEMA temporarily suspends event in Orangeburg County due to safety issue

The agency was working out a library location in Bowman.

BOWMAN, S.C. — FEMA said Monday they had to suspend some of their outreach activities due to a safety incident at an event in Orangeburg County.

The agency said they suspended services in the town of Bowman around 11 a.m. Monday. FEMA referred to it as a safety incident involving a community member. FEMA did not elaborate beyond that and News19 has reached out to local law enforcement which so far has not commented on what may have taken place.

The agency was at the Bowman Library on Charleston Highway helping people with FEMA services. FEMA plans to be back out in Bowman Tuesday, but Orangeburg County officials said it may be in a different location.

Last week, county officials said the area has reports of 7 homes destroyed, 19 with major damage and 21 with minor damage during Helene.

FEMA says people can apply for help online at DisasterAssistance.gov. People can also apply using the FEMA app for mobile devices or call toll-free at 800-621-3362. The telephone line is open daily, and help is available in most languages.  People are asked to give FEMA their number if you use a relay service, such as Video Relay Service (VRS), captioned telephone or another service. People can view an accessible video on how to apply on FEMA's YouTube page.
