New details released on human remains found in northeast Richland County

Human remains were found last week at a sand pit in the county.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — An incident report says human remains found in a sand pit in northeast Richland County could be of a woman who was buried there 10 years ago.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department released an incident report Tuesday that has new details about human remains discovered on January 12 at the sand pit located off Highway Church Road.

The report said that a construction worker at the site who was digging sand uncovered the remains with an excavator. Deputies who responded to the scene found what appeared to a femur, or thighbone.

Officer then found plaid and leopard print clothing that was laying with the remains. Richland County crime scene investigators were then called in to process the area. Other human bones were also located.

According to the report, an expert with the coroner's office said that the remains appeared to be of a woman between the age of 20 to 40 years old of an unknown race. He believes the remains had been buried for approximately 10 years and were in a five foot grave.

News19 contacted the coroner's office Tuesday who said it had no further updates on the identity of the body.

"We have worked over the weekend in collaboration with law enforcement crime scene units to investigate the possible identity of these remains," the coroner's office said in a statement. "We will be releasing more information as we may need the public’s assistance in this investigation."
