Fire rips through Columbia apartment complex, displaces 30 people

The fire was reported around 11:15 a.m., and firefighters found visible flames on the second floor when they arrived.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say 30 people have been displaced following a Friday morning apartment fire near Columbia.

According to a spokesperson for the Columbia-Richland Fire Department, the fire was called in around 11:15 a.m. in the 3400 block of Kay Street off St. Andrews Road. Officials said firefighters arrived at 3430 East Apartments to find a fire burning on the second floor of one of the buildings.

Columbia-Richland Fire said the fire displaced 30 people—15 adults and 15 children—and damaged about half of the building's units. The American Red Cross is assisting impacted residents.

Fire officials said there haven't been any reports of injuries. Irmo Fire District also responded to the fire, officials said. The cause is still under investigation.
