The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles has released images of the new REAL ID in preparation for its implementation in 2018.
This picture shows the driver's license/identification card that will be compliant with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. The card can be used to pass security at airports nationwide, enter secure federal buildings and visit military installations. A valid passport or other federally accepted identification can also be used.
This picture shows a non-compliant driver's license/identification card that may not be used at airport security, federal buildings and military posts. "NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION" will be plainly printed on the card. A second form of federally accepted identification will be required in addition to this card.
The official switch to the REAL ID will begin on October 1, 2020. People who don't go through airport security or visit federal facilities will not need to get one. Driver's licenses that are non-compliant will still allow residents to do things like drive and vote.
