Manhunt underway for Forest Acres suspect who escaped from custody in handcuffs

Officers say they're looking for 35-year-old Aaron Christopher Murphy.

FOREST ACRES, S.C. — Forest Acres Police are searching a suspect who they say escaped from police custody late Tuesday afternoon.

Officers are looking for 35-year-old Aaron Christopher Murphy.  According to police, Murphy he was in custody for questioning in connection to a previous commercial burglary when he ran away while handcuffed. 

Officers think he then jumped into a creek behind the Cooper Library. Police searched the creek area along with deputies from the Richland County Sheriff's Department. A perimeter was put up from Trenholm Road to Gamewell to Willingham Drive.

Police also used a drone and a K-9 to search for the suspect. The suspect was wearing dark pants ( possibly blue jeans), a white T-shirt, and a black jacket. He’s 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds. 

Officer are urging people in the area to be vigilant and take precautions. People who see Murphy are asked not to engage him and instead call 911 immediately.
