Two suspects shot, one dies in shooting at Forest Acres apartment complex

Police were alerted to a problem when two men showed up at the hospital with gunshot wounds.

FOREST ACRES, S.C. — Forest Acres Police say one person is dead and another person is wounded following a shooting at an apartment complex in the city.

Officers said around 8 p.m. Tuesday they got a call from Columbia Police of a shooting at The Landings, which are located on Covenant Road. Forest Acres investigators said the two victims, both men, had apparently come to MUSC Health on Forest Drive with gunshot wounds.

One of the men died at the hospital. The coroner identified him as 22-year-old Mekhi Courtney of Columbia.

Officers said when they got to the apartment complex they found evidence of shooting in the parking lot. Neighbors told officers they'd heard a disturbance sometime around 7 p.m.  Forest Acres police said there were no 911 calls about the shooting.

Police said their initial investigation show neither of the men lived at the complex or in Forest Acres' city limits. Courtney live in Columbia, while the other victim was from Lexington, police said.

The second victim continues to recover at the hospital.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
