Columbia, SC (WLTX) – The Columbia defense attorney held hostage by an escaped inmate says he hopes the convict is caught quickly.
Jimmy Causey, 46, held attorney Jack Swerling and his family at gunpoint back in 2004. But a year later, he escaped from Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia, but was recaptured three days later.
Causey escaped again yesterday from Lieber Correctional in Dorchester County just before 2 p.m. Wednesday.
“Hopefully he’ll get caught soon,” Swerling explained.
Swerling said law enforcement is taking care of him and he feels safe.
Causey has now escaped from two different prisons in a dozen years. He and another inmate escaped Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia in 2004 by hiding in a trash truck. They were captured three days later.
The South Carolina Department of Corrections has given little details on the recovery efforts.
The department sent WLTX this statement:
Efforts to apprehend escaped inmate Jimmy Causey are still underway. The State Law Enforcement Division is working with SCDC Police Services to conduct the search with assistance from law enforcement agencies. Details surrounding Causey’s escape are under investigation. If anyone sees Causey, they should not approach him. Call 9-1-1 immediately. Those with information about Causey’s whereabouts can also call (877)-349-2130 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. There is a reward for information leading to capture.
