Man Logs 1 Million Miles in Town Car

Topeka, KS (KSNT) -- TheUS Department of Transportation reports the average lifespan of a vehicle is 12 years, or about 128,000 miles.

Chet Belisle puts that average to shame.

Belisle loves driving his 1983 Lincoln Town Car.

"Ilike the ride.I like the style of it,"says Belisle, "AndI feel safe in it, because I've got more room."

Belisle's been driving coast to coast for twenty five years, and his pride and joy has never broken down.

"That car has been good on gas. Twenty-two miles per gallon on the highway," Belisle says, "Averages about 15-16 in town."

The odometer has rolled over a couple times, but Belisle says that's expected when a car hits the one million three hundred thousand mile mark.

The Lincoln can't last too much longer. And the secret to the car's longevity lies under the heavy metal hood, Belisle says his mechanics are used to lifting the 3.2 v8 engine because "That thing's got power."

Belislebegan logging miles and tracking tune ups the day he drove the car off the dealer's lot.

The vehicle only had 53 miles then. Since then, he's rebuilt the engine and transmission, and made full use of lifetime warrantees on nearly every other part.

For now,Belisle says he'll stick with his Lincoln until it stops running.

Belisle's next stop? On to San Antonio.

Belis chet paid $2200 dollars for his Lincoln when it was brand new. He says he's tried to sell it to used car dealerships, but no one will buy it because it has too many miles and they can't back up the warranty.
