LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Sarah Jessica Parker and her "Sex and the City" gal pals haven't lost their sex appeal.
The big-screen version of "Sex and the City" brought in $55.7 million on its opening weekend. The weekend results are nearly twice what distributor Warner Brothers had hoped.
Analysts had figured Paramount's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" might hold on to Number 1 for another weekend. But "Indiana Jones" slipped behind with $46 million in its second weekend, raising its 11-day total to nearly $217 million.
"Sex and the City" had the best debut ever for an R-rated comedy, topping the 45.1 million-dollar opening of "American Pie 2."
The weekend's other new wide release, Universal's fright flick "The Strangers," debuted solidly at Number 3 with more than $20 million.
Rounding out the top five were "Iron Man" with $14 million and "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" with $13 million.
