COLUMBIA, S.C. — It's is an exciting day at WLTX: Gandy’s Garden has a new logo!  A new sign with the refreshed branding is now on full display next to the raised beds.

Gandy’s Garden has been growing in WLTX’s backyard for 10 years. In 2014, Heidi Cullen, a senior scientist at Climate Central, posted a graphic on Twitter/X that shocked WLTX meteorologist, Jim Gandy.  The graphic showed that 50% of the nation’s commercial vegetable production was in California. Florida came in second at 7%. Given the ongoing drought in California at the time, Jim Gandy knew we would eventually feel the impact at local grocery stores. Jim approached station management about doing a garden segment to show viewers how to address the rising costs of vegetables, thus Gandy’s Garden was born. A Facebook group dedicated to the initiative, called Gandy’s Gardeners, boasts over 2500 members and counting.

For the last 10 years the original Gandy’s Garden logo has been an icon, representing an idea that blossomed into a significant project. Today, the mission behind Gandy’s Garden continues with an updated, modern look. WLTX will celebrate the new logo at the South Carolina State Fair. Stop by the WLTX booth, located in front of the Ellison Building, to pick up a new Gandy’s Garden sticker and tomato seed packet. The South Carolina State Fair runs from October 9 – 20, 2024.
