Garners Ferry Rd at Gills Greek Reopens

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Traffic is flowing freely again on one of the main throughfares on the southeast side of Columbia.

The SCDOT announced that Garners Ferry Road at the Gills Creek had reopened to traffic as of 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

That intersection had been shut down since October 4 due to the heavy flooding and storm damage that had been experienced in that area. Video that News19 recorded that day showed water above the tops of cars that had stalled out in that area. At least one vehicle was swept over the bridge and into the Gills Creek.

Two roads that intersect near there--Crowson Road and Fort Jackson Boulevard--are shut down due to damage.

SCDOT officials say roads across the region will slowly begin reopening as crews are able to make structural repairs.
