Governor McMaster announces nominee to lead state Department of Health and Human Services

Eunice Medina currently serves as the Chief of Staff and Deputy Director of Programs for the department.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Wednesday Governor Henry McMaster announced his pick to become the next director of the state's Department of Health and Human Services.

The Governor held a special press conference at the state house to announce who would be replacing two-time department Director Robert Kerr, who over saw changes in the state's healthcare system.

“Her name is Eunice Medina and she is a real pro. She has been around every aspect of this kind of work for her entire career,” McMaster said.

Medina currently serves as Chief of Staff and Deputy Director of Programs for the department.

Governor McMaster listed Medina’s experience and accomplishments, including her service to the Palmetto State.

“She has been here with us, at Department of Health and Human Services for three and a half years, working under Robbie Kerr, who has done a magnificent job. She has been at his right hand and making great progress, for which we are very thankful, and we are delighted that she has agreed to accept this challenge,” McMaster explained.

Medina took the podium and thanked the Governor for the nomination and said one of her primary interests will be the state’s Medicaid program.

“The Medicaid program currently serves approximately 60% of the state’s children and about 60% of births. Additionally, a significant number of South Carolinians with disabilities are enrolled in the program,” Medina said.

She said her focus will be on improving access to services.

“Given this large footprint, we have a responsibility to these individuals in Medicaid to better streamline how services are accessed. We can do this by continuing to support our disability community, by not only investing in those who provide care, but also funding more slots for Medicaid waiver programs to allow more people to receive care in their community,” Medina shared. She concluded her remarks by saying she looks forward to continuing to work with the department’s staff.

Her nomination will now hinge on confirmation by the state senate.

Wednesday afternoon, Senator Danny Verdin, who is the Chairman of the Senate Medical Affairs Committee, said the committee will make the confirmation process their first order of business this year.
