Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The road widening project on Interstate 20 in Richland County is going to take a little longer than previously thought.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation announced that the completion date for the project will now be June 27th, rather than May 24th as previously announced.
SCDOT says the delay is so they can replace the asphalt on a part of I-20 West near the I-77 interchange to a half mile east of the Two Notch Road exit. The agency says since they already had a contractor out there working on the rest of the project, it was cost-effective to use them to repair this part of the road as well.
The I-20 widening began in the fall of 2012. It's goal was to upgrade a stretch of the road from I-77 to just east of the Spears Creek Church Road exit. The six-mile stretch of road is going from four lanes to six. Crews also installed noise barrier walls and widened the made repairs to the bridge over Alpine Road.
