Two people dead after separate crashes on I-77 in Columbia

The crashes took place within two hours of each other and were not connected.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Two people are dead after separate crashes on Interstate 77 near Columbia Thursday night.

The first took place at 9:19 p.m. at I-77 near the 15 mile marker, which is the Percival Road exit. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a car was traveling south on I-77 when it went off the right side of the road and overturned.

The front seat passenger in the vehicle was killed. The coroner identified her as 20-year-old Shayna Stukes of Gaston.

The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The second collision took place at 11:12 p.m. on I-77 north near the 12 miles marker, or near the Forest Drive exit.

The collision involved a sedan and a motorcycle. According to troopers, the vehicles were both traveling northbound on I-77 when the motorcycle struck the sedan in the right rear corner. The motorcycle then overturned and traveled off the right hand side of the road. 

The motorcycle driver was identified by the Richland County Coroner's Office as 37-year-old Robert Licata of Lugoff. 

That collision also remains under investigation by the highway patrol.
