NEW ORLEANS — It's an incredible story of a child's strength. Abron Frye has fought a battle no child or adult should ever have to fight.
A story about true resilience lies in both the body and mind.
In a world where challenges often seem too big, Abron Frye said, "I feel great, and good and excited... I can't even explain it."
This young hero proves that strength isn’t measured by age or size, he said, "I have been on a huge journey, a huge journey and this is my checkpoint."
Instead by the courage to keep going, no matter the odds... Dr. Zach LeBlanc with the New Orleans Children's Hospital said, "He's been undergoing chemotherapy for the past two/two and half years. When he presented he was very very sick. He was in the ICU, he required several days to get the diagnosis."
At the innocent age of six, a month before his seventh birthday, Abron was diagnosed with childhood leukemia. Abron's mum Misty Frye says when her son developed a cough, she never ever imagined a more sinister illness was lurking.
She said, "Nobody should receive the diagnosis their child has cancer. But when you receive that diagnosis, it becomes like a nightmare. It's like the world changes."
She went on to say, "The cough didn't go away, the school paid attention, and they kept calling and saying something is wrong, they said Abron is crying hysterically, he says his chest is hurting bad. I was like this is the second day we're going to have to call the Pediatrician. She too was like I am going to send Abron to the children's hospital because I can't hear anything out of his left lung, well she would've never thought in a million years Abron was going to be diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia."
Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into years, the team at the New Orleans Children’s Hospital standing by Abron, as the young boy battled something no child should ever have to endure.
But this young warrior pushed through countless rounds of grueling cancer treatments, showing a level of courage and determination far beyond his years.
Monday, with a beaming smile, a heart full of hope and surrounded by family, friends, his hospital team, and even the Tulane football team, he rang the bell. A powerful symbol of victory, marking the end of his fight and the beginning of a cancer-free future.
Abron said, "Thank you for supporting me."
Abron's shining smile is a lasting reminder of his strength because the cancer that tried to take it away is now gone for good.
