Sumter police say suspect killed man during argument at home

The victim was found inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound.

SUMTER, S.C. — Sumter Police have arrested a suspect who they say shot and killed a man late Sunday night.

Investigators said Monday 38-year-old James Christopher Wilson is now charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

According to investigators, they were called around 10:30 p.m. Sunday to a location on Rhododendron Street for a report of a shooting. When they arrived they found the victim, 40-year-old Jeremie Devon Richardson, inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound. Richardson was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Investigators believe the shooting took place outside a home on Lirope Way, which is just off Rhododendron Street. They believe Wilson and a group of acquaintances were arguing at that location. During the argument, police said Richardson entered the dispute and there was an exchange of gunfire that involved the suspect.

Wilson was arrested shortly later that evening at a home on King Street. He was then booked at the Sumter County Detention Center.

The case remains under investigation.
