Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Jurors will deliberate Wednesday in the trial of two men accused of killing a Columbia woman where she worked.
Trenton Barnes and Lorenzo Young are charged in the 2013 shooting death of Kelly Hunnewell, who was shot while working her early morning shift at a bakery. Prosecutors said the killing happened during a botched robbery attempt.
The prosecution and the defense rested their cases just before noon Tuesday. Neither Barnes nor Young testified in the trial, and the defense called no witnesses.
Closing arguments took almost three hours to conclude. At the end of the remarks, the judge asked the jury if they wanted to begin deliberation or go home, and they chose to wrap up for the day and start their work in the morning.
During closing statements, defense attorneys argued there is no DNA evidence in the case and have told the jurors that prosecution has not proven their case beyond a reasonable doubt. But prosecutors say the pair acted with malice and a disregard for Hunnewell's life.
Barnes' brother -- Troy Stevenson -- is being tried separately in connection with the case.
