NEWBERRY, S.C. — A program providing children with essential items in the Midlands has just expanded its services to Newberry.
Midlands Orphan Relief serves children who are abused, neglected, and abandoned. Their "Just in Case" closet program supports 12 counties in the state and supplies clean clothing to underserved children who go to Title One schools.
These schools are considered to have the highest need in their counties. As of this month, this program is now serving children at Newberry Elementary.
“We’re just thrilled to be able to help those kids. They just need a lift up. They just need to know that someone cares.”
The organization was founded in the Lowcountry about 20 years ago and has worked its way along the I-26 corridor. Its mission to to provide support and meet the needs of children who are deemed at-risk. Through this program, they are serving children in Orangeburg, Richland, Lexington, Fairfield, and now Newberry.
The closet is stocked with clothing like shoes and jackets that are donated from the public and other civic organizations. Children also have access to care kits with two weeks worth of clothing, stuffed animals, school supplies, and toiletries.
“Some of our children can’t even take showers at home and have to use the toiletries that we give them in public schools to take their morning showers which is just so sad but we are here to make them feel successful."
Last year, the organization has helped more than 5,000 children. It is currently seeking donations to continue serving the area.
