WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — The West Columbia Police Department is continuing to investigate but say there is no active threat, after two men died and one was injured in a shooting at the 900 block of Center St. Sunday morning.
According to the West Columbia investigators, 17-year-old Kashaan Sims died at the scene, while 29-year-old Alvin Mcdaniel Jr. died later from his injures at the hospital. A third person was also injured and taken to the hospital, and later released.
Alexis Sims, a family member of Kashaan Sims, says he was just getting his GED and working at Taco Bell, and he welcomed a son three weeks ago.
"He was so excited," said Sims. "He was a happy kid {and} it saddens me his life was took away so early."
West Columbia Police Police Chief Marion Boyce said in a statement to News 19, "We want to assure the residents of West Columbia that there is no active threat to our community. Your safety is our top priority. The West Columbia Police Department is fully engaged and working tirelessly, as well as collaborating with neighboring jurisdictions, to thoroughly investigate this case and ensure our community's continued safety and security."
Police have not yet said what they believe may have led to the shooting or if they've identified any suspects in the killing.
News 19 requested an incident report from the shooting from the West Columbia Police but hasn't heard back yet on that request.
