A stretch of Killian Road in northeast Richland County is temporarily shut down

Crews are working to reopen the road as soon as possible, county officials said.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County officials said a stretch of Killian Road in northeast Richland County is closed due to the recent heavy rains.

The county said late Sunday afternoon that Killian Road near the Killian Loop from west of Interstate 77 to Wilson Road is shut down.  The area saw heavy flash flooding Saturday that led to flooded yards and streets in the area all the way up to Blythewood.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said crews will begin making repairs to the road Tuesday morning, weather permitting. Drivers should detour around the area using US 21, North Pines Road, and Farrow Road. A map of that detour is below in this article.

The news doesn't get any better for the prospects for the roads, however. The state is currently bracing for Tropical Storm Debby. The system is expected to begin dumping heavy rain on the state Tuesday and will continue to drench South Carolina through Friday.

Officials from the National Weather Service and other state and county agencies are warning of potentially life-threatening flooding that could also damage roads.

In advance of the storm, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency in South Carolina to allow government agencies to prepare for the affects of the storm.
