COLUMBIA, S.C. — Days before the New Year, Sears Holdings, the company that owns Sears and Kmart stores across the nation, released a list of 80 stores that will be closing in March 2019.
Among the Kmart stores on the list is the Big Kmart superstore at 1143 Broad Street in Sumter.
The release states that the closings are part of Sears Holdings' process to "accelerate its strategic transformation and facilitate its financial restructuring."
Liquidation sales are expected to begin in two weeks.
At one time, there were three Kmart locations in Columbia -- on Fort Jackson Boulevard, Two Notch at Parklane, and Bush River Road at I-26 -- and one in Camden.
The West Columbia location is unaffected at this time.
