Columbia, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina's Medal of Honor Recipient, Kyle Carpenter jumped out of a plane to kick off this year's Marine Corps Marathon.
Carpenter along with a troupe of 11 parachutists completed a tandem skydive to deliver a 7,800 square foot American flag to the starting line of the race in Arlington, VA.

President Obama awarded the the Lexington resident and retired U.S. Marine Corporal the medal during a ceremony in July at the White House. The USC sophomore was nominated for the medal after shielding a fellow marine from a grenade in Afghanistan.

According to the Military Times, Carpenter said, ""At the end of the run, when I'm hurting and I'm happy that it's over, I'm really just going to be thankful that I have the ability for my legs to hurt and my legs to be sore."
Carpenter completed the 26.2-mile race with a time of 5:12.
