The corrections agency said the death is being investigated as a suspected homicide.

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Corrections is investigating after an inmate at a maximum security prison was stabbed to death.

The agency said 23-year-old Idris Wasim Ballard Gallardo died Tuesday at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville. The agency said he was stabbed in a common area of his assigned housing unit and was pronounced dead shortly before 10 a.m.

An autopsy will be performed on him soon.

The corrections agency said the death is being investigated as a suspected homicide by the South Carolina Department of Corrections Inspector General's office. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's crime scene unit and the Lee County Coroner are assisting.

Online records show Gallardo was sentenced to 25 years in prison on a conviction on a voluntary manslaughter charge from Greenwood County. He had been in prison since 2020 but had been at Lee Correctional since 2023.
