LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Several Lexington County boards and commissions have vacancies and term expirations coming up in the new year.
Boards encompassing COMET transportation, community mental health, social services, disabilities and special needs, forestry, foster care review, the Gilbert-Summit fire district and Irmo fire control will have positions available soon.
Chris Wooten, the vice president of the Lexington County Legislative Delegation, which oversees the various boards, said some of these term expirations happen in February, March and June.
"It's hard to find folks that want to serve on some of these boards, just because it's a very time-consuming issue, but when you find someone that has a passion for one of these topics, it's great to get them involved, and like I said, a lot of times, folks just don't know how to get involved," Wooten said.
Wooten said some of the boards are on a volunteer basis, while others are paid. Sometimes, members of the boards are appointed by recommendation of the vice chair or chair or by someone else on the board. Paperwork is filed, and if this person qualifies, the Lexington County Delegation votes on whether the member should be a part of the board or commission.
"If there's a topic coming up where something is needed, it's not just typically needed in Lexington County. It's not just typically needed in Barnwell County. It's something usually that's needed across the board because a lot of - you'll find a lot of the agencies within the state struggle with the same issues," Wooten said. "So, if we're taking it up obviously while we're in session, then we'll hear from the people on these boards obviously."
