Deputies: Suspect hits Lexington County deputy with car in parking lot of sheriff's department

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at the department's law enforcement complex on Gibson Road.

LEXINGTON, S.C. — A Lexington County deputy is recovering after investigators said a suspect hit him with a car in the parking lot of the sheriff's department headquarters.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at the department's law enforcement complex on Gibson Road in Lexington.

According to deputies, the suspect came into the sheriff's department to do work inside the building. At some point, however, it was determined that the person had a warrant, and deputies said the suspect ran out of the building. Deputies said there was a struggle between the suspect and at least one deputy in the parking lot, and that the suspect got in a car and struck the deputy with a vehicle, then drove off.

The deputy suffered non life-threatening injuries but was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Deputies pursued the suspect across part of the county but lost track of him. However, a short time later the suspect was identified, located, and taken into custody in Richland County. That person's name has not yet been released.

News19 is working to determined what the original warrant was that the suspect was facing and what new charges may be filed.
