Lexington County teacher charged with assaulting students

In one incident, Singletary allegedly struck a student after he thought the student touched his head, according to warrants.

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A teacher at Irmo Middle School is accused of assaulting two students at the school.

Jermaine Cornelius Singletary, 51, is charged with two counts of third-degree assault, according to arrest warrants.

“When we became aware of these two incidents, we opened our investigation and determined Singletary allegedly assaulted two students on two separate occasions,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “He’s accused of assaulting one student in March, the other in October.”

Singletary struck a student in March after he thought the student touched his head, according to an arrest warrant.

Another warrant said Singletary struck another student in October after the student retrieved portion of an assignment Singletary threw in a trash can.

Singletary did not report either incident to school administrators, according to deputies.

Singletary turned himself in Wednesday morning. He is being held in the Lexington County Detention Center.
