LEXINGTON, S.C. — 2023 was a year of growth for the Town of Lexington, with its parks and new businesses coming in, but its new mayor is hoping that 2024 will be even better.
In the Town's first council meeting of the year on Tuesday, the council gave updated reports on traffic safety.
"A Town of Lexington transportation crew has begun removing the median from Whiteford Way at the intersection with Sunset Boulevard. Lane closures are expected from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. this week as part of the road improvements in this area," said Mayor Pro-Tem Ron Williams.
Another area of concern is the new Cedar Road bridge that is expected to be finished at the end of the year.
Although SCDOT is in charge of the project, Mayor Hazel Livingston says the town plans to work closely with all of the state agencies involved to try to make driving around the construction a bit easier.
"Traffic is a tough, tough situation and it is the best we're going to be able to do is have lots of conversation with the county and with the state," Mayor Livingston explained. "Some of those conversations are already going on. There is a project that we're going to be looking at probably at the next work session, the engineers are going to bring it to us and we're going to look at it, and we'll be going forward there, how we can get all the money to do it, and it would be a big improvement for some of Lexington. So there is stuff on the table, it's just getting all these other agencies that these roads belong to, to work with us."
Mayor Livingston says traffic, quality of life, and smart growth are at the top of the council's list.
The mayor also gave a quick vision plan update, with a focus on their parks and trails that are expected to be finished in the upcoming year as well.
"The park's going to be opening and the Old Mill Trail is going to be opening," she said. "I go to church at Watershed Fellowship, and it's right there where the Old Mill Trail will be and its a topic of conversation every week. People are just so excited that it's about to be there and be open," Livingston said with a smile.
When asked to describe the upcoming year in a few words, the mayor said "Absolutely wonderful."
The Town's next traffic committee meeting will be on Wednesday, January 10, at 8 a.m.
