We have contacted the school districts in Lexington to find out how the teacher rally will impact them, and what their plans are for May 1.
Lexington District One issued a statement from their Superintendent Dr. Greg Little saying some of their teachers are planning to go to the statehouse to rally with the group. Although they will have teachers out tomorrow, Little says this is an important time of year for students and they will have a normal school day.
Lexington District Two has not responded to our attempts to reach out.
Lexington District Three’s Public Information Officer Mackenzie Taylor told us that they "truly support" their teachers and "encourage them to exercise their voices."
"As we move towards the end of the school year, our focus continues to be our students and ensuring that the educational, emotional and social support that they receive in our schools is the absolute best that it can be, without exception," Taylor said.
Taylor added that they expected the impact on staffing to be minimal, but the district did have a plan in place to staff classrooms if needed.
Lexington District Four’s Community Relations officer Lisa Ingram told us that they will be open tomorrow. Some teachers have taken off, and while they suppor them, schools will operate as usual.
Lexington Richland District Five issued a statement Monday saying that they will be closed due to the amount of teachers who have requested off, saying that it is out of an abundance of caution that the decision was made.
Lexington Richland 5 plans to make up the day at the end of the year, pending board review and approval.
