LEXINGTON, S.C. — The Town of Lexington is implementing new measures to address traffic congestion on Sunset Boulevard, one of its busiest roads.
This week, town officials made changes at the stoplight near Walmart, removing a stop sign after the light to improve traffic flow and prevent backups.
Residents say the area has been a problem for years, with long waits frustrating drivers and causing delays.
Laurin Barnes, a spokesperson for the Town of Lexington, explained the adjustment.
“It used to be a four-way stop. Now we’ve removed the one for cars turning into the parking lot. So, there are only three stop signs remaining, which allows traffic to flow and prevents it from backing up into the intersection. All other directions still have to stop,” Barnes said.
Residents say the changes are needed and that they've been dealing with traffic issues for a long time.
“We got traffic coming so much it’s hard to get from one spot to another spot,” Elijah Green said.
This change is part of a larger effort to improve traffic conditions on Sunset Boulevard. Town officials are also working on a project called the "Sunset Split," which aims to separate the two lanes and further alleviate congestion. Town leaders hope to begin construction in early 2026 and finish by 2028.
