Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The wait is almost over! Later this week, the public will finally get their first in-person look at the new lion cubs at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.
The African cubs, under the watchful eye of mom Thabisa, began to explore their outdoor habitat Monday morning. Taking in the sights, sounds and smells, and not to mention plenty of play time, the cubs spent a good 45 minutes outside then wandered in for a well-deserved nap.
Weighing in at a little more than 30 pounds each, the cubs were large enough to take their first steps out of their indoor home, and have adjusted quickly to their new surrounding, according to the zoo.
Officials say outdoor time will increase every day as the 3-month-old cubs, who are all female, become more confident in the new habitat. Wednesday morning will be the final outing before the cubs first public debut, which is planned for Thursday at 9 a.m.
Want to help pick the names for these sweet cubs? The zoo will post all the naming details on their website Thursday morning.
