Deputies: Gun found in student's backpack at Lower Richland High School

The 17-year-old is charged as a juvenile.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A student is facing charges after Richland County deputies say he brought a gun to Lower Richland High School Wednesday morning .

The 17-year-old is charged as a juvenile with possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a pistol under the age of 18, and unlawful carry of a handgun. 

An incident report states that the student walked through a metal detector around 8 a.m. and the device alerted and triggered. The teen was then asked to go through the metal detector again, and it went off a second time.

At that point his bookbag was searched and officer said they found a gun. The report said the gun had a clip with unfired rounds in it, but that there was no round in the chamber of the gun. 

Deputies said there is no evidence that any other students were presented or threatened with the gun.

The 17-year-old was booked into the juvenile wing of Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
